Same-gender-loving, or SGL, is a term coined for African-American use by activist Cleo Manago. It is a conscious alternative description of sexual identity in place of Eurocentric terms like "gay," "lesbian," "bisexual" or "queer" for the African-American community. The term emerged in the early 1990s as a culturally affirming way to describe African-American sexual identity and in resistance to sexual racism and anti-blackness experienced in white LGBTQ+ communities.

The song is specifically about love between two African-American same gender loving individuals.
